Living in Montenegro is the part of the plan that founders research last and think about most. The company and the permit are procedures; the city, the rent and the school run are daily life. This guide gives 2026 numbers and the practical details our clients ask about after the paperwork is done.
Which city in Montenegro should you choose?
Three regions, three different lives:
| Region | Best for | Typical two-bedroom rent (2026) | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Podgorica (capital) | Business, families, year-round services | €600 to €1,000 | Largest city, ministries and banks, 2 to 3 hours to both sea and mountains |
| Coast: Budva, Tivat, Kotor, Bar, Herceg Novi | Lifestyle, tourism businesses, remote workers | €700 to €1,500 (higher in summer) | Adriatic towns, international community, seasonal price swings |
| North: Nikšić, Kolašin, Žabljak | Lower costs, nature, quieter life | €300 to €500 | Mountain towns, skiing and hiking, fewer international services |
Founders who need the registry, banks and ministries every week choose Podgorica. Families who work remotely often pick Tivat or Kotor for the international schools and the airport. The north suits anyone whose priority is cost and quiet.
What does daily life cost in 2026?
Prices in euro, the official currency, which removes exchange risk for anyone invoicing European clients:
- Groceries for two: €350 to €500 per month
- Utilities (electricity, water, internet) for a two-bedroom apartment: €120 to €200
- Restaurant meal for two in Podgorica: €30 to €50
- Fuel: around €1.50 per litre
- Private health check with a specialist: €30 to €60
- Kindergarten, private: €250 to €450 per month
A couple in Podgorica typically lives on €1,500 to €2,200 per month including rent. On the coast in summer, add 20% to 40% for rent and dining.
How does healthcare work for residents?
Residents registered with the health insurance fund, which happens through the company for founders, use the public system. Most of our clients combine it with private clinics for speed: appointments are same-week and prices are low by Western European standards. Pharmacies are well stocked and many medicines are available without the prescription requirements of larger EU markets.
What about schools and kindergartens?
Public schools are free for registered residents and teach in Montenegrin. International schools with English curricula operate in Podgorica and on the coast, with annual fees from roughly €5,000 to €12,000. Enrolment support is part of our Life & Business Full Package, because the school decision often determines the city.
Banking, phones and getting things done
- Bank account: opened with passport and residence card; the company account comes first during registration
- Mobile and internet: prepaid SIM cards are available immediately, fibre internet is common in cities
- Driving: foreign licences are recognised for a limited period, after which an exchange is required
- Language: English is common in the capital and coastal towns; official procedures are handled by our team in your language
Is Montenegro safe and how is the climate?
Crime rates are low and the pace of life is calm. Podgorica has hot summers and mild winters; the coast is Mediterranean; the north has real winters with skiing. Many residents keep an apartment in Podgorica and spend summer weekends at the coast, which is under an hour away.
