Banking in Montenegro for Foreigners
What banks ask for
Every bank applies anti-money-laundering rules under the Central Bank of Montenegro. For a company they require the registration extract, the ultimate beneficial owner chart, passports of owners and directors, a description of the business and evidence of where the initial funds come from. Missing one item restarts the review, so we check the file before the visit.
Resident and non-resident accounts
Personal accounts for non-residents are possible at several banks with a passport and proof of address, with some limits on products until a residence permit is issued. The company account is opened once the company is registered; the residence permit is not a precondition.
Transfers and currencies
Accounts are held in euro, with SEPA and SWIFT transfers and multi-currency options at larger banks. International incoming payments above certain thresholds are reviewed for documentation, so invoices and contracts should be ready to show.
Merchant and online payments
Shops, restaurants, rentals and online businesses need a merchant agreement, a POS terminal or a payment gateway connected to the fiscalisation system. We arrange the acquiring contract and link it to your accountant's e-invoicing setup.
